Importer Exporter (IEC) Code

IEC code is required by a person for exporting or importing goods. It is a 10 digit code which is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). All businesses which are engaged in Import and Export of goods require IEC Code Registration to do his business, IEC code has lifetime validity.
Importers are not allowed to proceed without this code and exporters can’t take benefit of exports from DGFT, customs, Export Promotion Council, if they don’t have this code.

IEC code is required by importers to clear customs and shipment, and to transfer money to foreign banks. Exporters require IEC Code to send shipments and receive money from foreign banks. In short, no importer/exporter can operate in India without getting the IEC Code.

Persons involved in smuggling and other modus operandi of imports and exports, in violation of prohibitions/ restrictions in vogue or with intent to evade duties or fraudulently claim export incentives are liable to serious penal action under the Customs Act. The offending goods can be confiscated and heavy fines and penalties imposed. There are also provisions for arrests.

Agreement, in case office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity
/telephone bill.
• Bank Certificate as per ANF 2A(I)/ Cancelled Cheque bearing preprinted name of applicant and A/C No.

    • Copy of PAN card of the applicant entity.
    • Copy of Passport (first & last page)/Voter’s I-Card /UID (Aadhar Card)
    /Driving Licence/PAN (any one of these) of the Managing Partner
    signing the application.
    • Copy of Partnership Deed.
    • Sale deed in case business premise is self-owned; or Rental/Lease
    Agreement, in case office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity
    /telephone bill.
    • Bank Certificate as per ANF 2A (I)/Cancelled Cheque bearing preprinted name of the applicant entity and A/C No.

Digital Photograph (3x3cms) of the Designated Partner/Director of the
Company signing the application.
• Copy of PAN card of the applicant entity.
• Copy of Passport (first & last page)/Voter’s I-Card /UID (Aadhar Card)
/Driving Licence/ PAN (any one of these) of the Managing
Partner/Director signing the application.
• Certificate of incorporation as issued by the RoC

Frequently Asked Question

Import Export Code or IEC is a 10-digit code that a business or a person needs to import/export goods/services. This code is issued by DGFT (Director General of Foreign trade), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. The validity of this code is for lifetime, that is, there is no need to renew it.

IEC is a code required by business who are involved in imports and exports in India.

Under these circumstances importer exporter code is not required:

  1. Import/export of goods for personal use, which is not connected with trade, manufacture or agriculture.
  2. Import/export by government ministries and departments, and certain notified charitable organizations.

Generally it takes 7 to 10 days to get the IE code after the submission of all required documents and application.

To Get IE code, a copy of PAN Card, proof of address of business, constitution of the business and a letter from the banker is required.
